Mohideen Grand Mosque, Anuradhapura

Mohideen Jumma Grand Masjid, Anuradhapura is the largest mosque in the City of Anuradhpura. It can house as many as 3000 worshippers at any given time. The mosque was previously situated in Peacock Lane in Anuradhapura close to the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Sacred Bo (Ficus Religiosa) Tree that was propagated from a sapling of the Tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.

The Government of the day proposed in the 1950s that the area be declared a Sacred City and the mosque graciously offered to relocate to its present site. Construction of the mosque began in earnest in 1960 and the mosque was declared open in 1962.
