The Red Mosque, also known as Jamiul Alfar and Sammankot Mosque, is situated in Second Cross Street, Pettah, the bustling commercial centre of Colombo. Built in 1909, it is a well known landmark known for its beautiful red and white façade going up to 5 storeys.
A remarkable feature of this mosque is that instead of the usual white, each brick of this building has been painted in red and white creating a striking design. This mosque is of Indo-Saracenic architecture with pomergranate shaped domes. It was originally built as a place of worship for South Indian businessmen. Today the numbers have swelled so that for Friday Jummah prayers 5,000 devotees attend.
